St Peter’s School, York, has today been named as The Norths Independent School of the Year

The honour, which will be formally announced on Sunday in Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide on November 25, follows The Sunday Times’ designation of York as Best Place to Live 2018 in March of this year, making St Peter’s officially the best school in the best UK city.

The award is also the School’s second of the year: in February the Pre-Preparatory School at St Peter’s (Clifton) won the national TES Prep/Pre-Prep School of the Year Award with St Peter’s Prep and Senior Schools being shortlisted in the same category for their age groups.  St Peter’s Preparatory School (St Olave’s) has also been shortlisted in this year’s TES Awards for Sport.

The day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3-18, rated ‘Excellent’ in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate in its last inspection, was selected by judges from the publication after celebrating another year of excellent results at GCSE and Sixth Form examinations this summer.

Alastair McCall, editor of Parent Power, said: “St Peter’s appeals to parents across the north of England and beyond for the enviable combination it offers of academic achievement, redoubtable sporting opportunities, and a commitment to a holistic education for its near-600 senior school pupils.

“Pupils are encouraged to volunteer and a welter of societies allows them to develop and pursue interests outside of the classroom that become a key part of school life. St Peter’s develops determined all-rounders capable of contributing to society once they leave, confident in the skills they have acquired at this historic sc

Incoming Head Master Jeremy Walker, who will take up post in January following his time as Principal of King’s School, Rochester, said:

“St Peter’s is an extraordinarily special place and today’s announcement and the judges’ recognition of the character of the school confirms everything that I and my own family look forward to being part of nex

“As the world’s fourth oldest school, St Peter’s combines a long tradition of academic rigour within a focused learning community, with a lively, modern approach to education. The sporting, artistic, intellectual and cultural opportunities at the school are inspiring, stimulating both participation and achievement at the highest levels.

“More than that: St Peter’s is an exceptionally happy and friendly school, where enthusiasm, fair play and development of the whole person are considered as equally important as success in examinations. I know that the entire community of pupils, parents, staff and Old Peterites will share my delight at this recognition from The Sunday Times. What a wonderful continuation to a year of achievement and recognition for St Peter’s: the best school in the best city to live.
